Every once and a while, we feature our regular customers on our website! Today, I wanted to ask each of you to consider helping Mateo.
Mateo is now seven years old. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) just five days before his fifth birthday. His leukemia is complicated by a genetic factor called the Philadelphia Chromosome. It makes it much more likely that chemotherapy alone will not stop his cancer and that he may need a bone marrow transplant.
Unfortunately, Mateo does not have any matches in the bone marrow database. He was adopted from Guatemala and has no full siblings or other relatives that match. You can help by considering joining the National Marrow Donor Database. If you are between 18 and 60 years old and meet certain health guidelines. Even if you are not allowed to donate blood, you still maybe be able to register with the marrow database.
Registering is easy, you can do it on-line at http://www.marrow.org/ where you fill out a questionnaire and they send you a swab kit. You simply rub the cotton swabs they send on the inside of your cheek and send it back.
Good Morning, it is that time again. where oh where does the time go. I am sending out the link to visit so you can all tell the world who your Best Local Independent Coffee House is!
Please visit the polling website and vote for your Willow Glen favorites. You must vote for a minimum of 15 business to make your ballot count.
You probably all know that I have become very active in the fight against breast cancer. You may also know, that my sister Carmen, is a 3 year survivor. Ironically. I started supporting breast cancer fundraisers, 6 months before she was diagnosed! Talk about making it personal. Telling our mother was the hardest thing we’ve ever done.
I’m one of thousands of people all over the country who will be doing this, all to raise funds for the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade.
Since March of this year I have walked/hiked over 150 miles to prepare for this 2 day 40 mile walk. I am ready and I will make you proud. So let’s make a deal! If you make a donation, I’ll do all of the walking!
To make a donation please visit my donation page ** under the Avon Walk in San Francisco.
If you’d like me to walk in honor/memory of anyone close to you who has battled breast cancer, please drop a note in with your pledge. I thank you very much for taking the time to read this letter, and I thank you in advance for your support. Together we can make a difference!
Warm Regards, Elva Acevedo

Robert Goldman is a geek’s geek, a Silicon Valley inventor who likes to know exactly how things work.
He tinkered with interactive television back in the day. More recently he developed and sold the patents to key bits of the technology that makes downloadable music possible. His sharp mind has made him rich, but even Goldman has his limits when it comes to understanding how life works.
Like when his sister was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1998. How could anyone understand how that works? Goldman, who is used to finding answers, was the one left asking, Why?
“You go to the doctor and they say to you, ‘You’ve got a 30 percent chance to live,’ ” says Goldman, 50. “What is this, a lottery?”
Robert and his latest invention were featured in Friday’s San Jose Mercury News, in an article about his efforts to create a better delivery mechanism for chemotherapy drugs. When he’s not inventing cool gadgets, Robert regularly enjoys a cup of coffee at Elva’s Coffee Stop. Maybe you should. too?
While many of our customers are getting ready for Halloween, Elva’s Coffee Stop is also decorated for ‘La Dia de los Muertos’ — or Day of the Dead in Mexican culture.
All month long, we welcome artwork from Carolynn Espino – who we’ve featured before – this time with her festively bright colors right in season with the day of festively remembering friends and family members who have died.
